Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) stalwart Keheliya Rambukwella who is currently in remand custody and receiving treatment at the Welikada Prison Hospital, submitted his resignation from his Cabinet position as the Minister of Environment to President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday.

The resignation was accepted by the President and was later confirmed via a gazette notice published by the Department of Government Printing.

According to a gazette notice issued by the President’s Secretary, Keheliya Rambukwella has officially resigned from his position, effective 3 February.

His resignation comes after Rambukwella was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on 3 February in connection to the controversial scam involving the importation of substandard human immunoglobulin IV vials to Sri Lanka. He was later remanded by the Maligakanda Magistrates Court.
