Defence Secretary General (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne yesterday confirmed that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was temporarily relocated to Trincomalee Naval Base on Tuesday.
“The former Prime Minister was taken to the Trincomalee Navy Dockyard, after the military had protected him from thousands of violent protesters who surrounded his official residence Temple Trees in Colombo,” the Defence Secretary told journalists yesterday.
Noting that it is important to protect every single life in the country, he said it was decided to provide security for the former Prime Minister.
“As one of the former Presidents of the country, he is entitled to adequate security and protection,” Gunaratne added.
The Defence Secretary also said the former Prime Minister will be relocated to a place of his choice, after the situation in the country normalises.
“He (former Primer Rajapaksa) will be protected as long as he lives,” Gunaratne added.
