Dilith Jayaweera |
Mawbima Janatha Pakshaya (MJP), led by prominent businessman Dilith Jayaweera yesterday made clear its commitment to addressing a gap in Sri Lanka’s political arena by aiming to be a political party with a vision for economic, social, and political sustainability, with the ultimate goal of fostering a happier nation.
Party leader Dilith Jayaweera expressed the party’s aspiration to build a Sri Lankan State driven by an entrepreneurial mindset, particularly leveraging the support and creativity of the nation’s youth and women.
“I strongly believe that this country must become a centre point for entrepreneurs. It is critical that we focus on creating a politically literate Sri Lankan community in order to fulfil the crucial need for a National Policy framework, which the Sri Lankan people have been deprived of because of the enduring socioeconomic and political impacts of colonial rule,” he said.
Jayaweera made these comments at the opening of the new MJP head office located on Park Avenue in Colombo yesterday.
Jayaweera assured that the MJP will endeavour to secure a substantial influx of foreign income to the country by fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship. He said this approach aims to persuade the country’s youth to remain in Sri Lanka and contribute their skills and services to the nation, thereby discouraging emigration.
“It is especially important that we focus on, and bring into discussion a more scientific economic plan that will allow us to look at optimal solutions to the problems we are facing as opposed to turning towards hurriedly proposed changes that are very clearly baseless and misinformed in order to redirect our economy towards a more successful path,” he noted.
He also called for an end to the use of divisive rhetoric in the political arena for selfish political gain which leads to communal disharmony in the country.
“We must create a safe space for individual communities to be able to voice their concerns and opinions and be able to develop a national consciousness comprising all these elements,” he said.
According to Jayaweera his party is prepared to channel this consciousness to create a plan that will allow Sri Lanka to move forward as one nation, leaving behind the general mistrust between communities since independence.
The event was attended by MJP Senior Leader Dr. Hemakumara Nanayakkara and members of the party executive committee and others.
Addressing the gathering Nanayakkara said MJP’s goal is to create a new political culture that is inclusive, accepting, open to the opinions of others, and focused on national interest. He said it also seeks to defy the intolerant and divisive way of doing politics that is commonly in practice today.
Jayaweera was appointed as the leader of the MJP in September this year signalling his entry to active politics.
Jayaweera assumed leadership of the party, taking over from Nanayakkara, who now serves in an advisory capacity with the title of ‘Senior Leader’.
Media reports have suggested the possibility of other political parties contemplating the formation of a coalition with Jayaweera’s party. This speculation arises from his apparent intentions to participate in the upcoming presidential election.
