Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe

Pioneering business magazine LMD has announced that its ‘Sri Lankan Of The Year’ (SLOTY) for 2024 is the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.

LMD says, “The tough task of reviving a severely depleted economy began in earnest under Dr. Weerasinghe’s leadership. He was realistic about the challenges ahead and acknowledged that the crisis would not be resolved promptly. Weerasinghe didn’t sugar-coat the situation, and candidly predicted that hardships would likely persist until at least December of that year.”

The magazine continues: “When he assumed the role of Governor of the Central Bank in April 2022, inflation stood at 29.8% and peaked at 61% in November that same year before gradually decreasing. Thanks to stringent policy measures, inflation dropped to single digits by July 2023, marking a significant improvement over the course of a year.”

LMD’s 30th Sri Lankan Of The Year joins the company of many distinguished citizens over the years. This accolade has ranked among the island’s eminent awards since it was launched back in 1995, when the late Sri Lankabhimanya Lakshman Kadirgamar was nominated for the first of two such accolades – the second was awarded posthumously.
