Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody
The Energy Ministry has decided to implement the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka’s (PUCSL) recommendation to reduce electricity tariffs by an average of 20% across all categories.
The clarification came from Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody on Saturday (18) following earlier mixed messages from the Ministry.
On Friday (17), the Ministry initially announced that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) would only implement the tariff revision after receiving confirmation and guidance from the Finance Ministry (https://www.ft.lk/front-page/Power-play-Energy-Ministry-seeks-green-light-from-Finance-Ministry-for-electricity-tariff-slash/44-771920).
However, a day after, the Minister assured that the PUCSL’s approved revision, effective from 18 January, would proceed as planned.
Jayakody opined that the decision would provide significant relief to people and support many industries which have been struggling with high energy costs.
Despite this clarification, the mixed messaging raised concerns about its immediate implementation.
