Staff of the Finance Ministry and General Treasury have donated part of their May salaries to the Widows and Orphans Fund. A statement from the Department of Government Information said, Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygalle has donated 50% of his salary and other officers between 25% and 10% and general employees a day’s pay.
The gesture follows Secretary to the President and former Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera making an appeal to all Government servants to contribute their month’s salary wholly or partly to the COVID-19 fund given the financial difficulties faced by the country. The Information Department’s statement said this gesture by the Finance Ministry staff would be a good example for others to emulate as part of strengthening the public sector support amidst challenging times.
