The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved awarding contracts to five new tea companies to operate in the waiting area for the departure terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for the next three years.
The selected companies are Euro Scan Exports Ltd., English Tea Shop (UK) Ltd., Sunshine Consumer Lanka Ltd., U.H.E. Exports Ltd., and Ceylon Royal Teas Ltd.
The decision follows a national competitive bidding process aimed at maintaining the existing tea shops in this area.
“After receiving eight bids and evaluating them, it was decided to award the contracts only to five companies,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said during the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.
He said the decision was made following the recommendation of the Technical Evaluation Committee and the Standing Procurement Committee, both appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The proposal submitted by Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
