President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa met last night at the Government group meeting, where the PM had reiterated that he has the support of the majority of SLPP MPs in Parliament.
The meeting was attended by MP Dulles Allahaperuma who is tipped to be the Premier if, and when, Mahinda steps down and several others who have called on the PM to step down.
There had been heated exchange of words between some of the MPs who are staunchly in favour of Mahinda Rajapaksa and those who are calling for his resignation, political sources said.
The President who had hinted that he may ask the PM to step down has not made any such request at last night’s meeting.
Allahaperuma who had written to the President several days ago saying the PM must step down to pave the way for an interim Government had said he had done so in the interest of the country and not due to any personal agenda.
The meeting had ended on a sour note after heated exchanges among several MPs.
