Gambling Regulatory Authority gets Cabinet approval

The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved immediate drafting of legislation for the establishment of a Gambling Regulatory Authority to standardise the industry.

The decision follows initial approval by the Cabinet of Ministers on 26 June 2023 to create an independent regulatory body to oversee gambling institutions.

“The Legal Draftsman recently sought the concurrence of the Cabinet to proceed with drafting the necessary Bills, leading to the latest endorsement,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said yesterday.

The new regulatory framework is expected to bring transparency, ensure responsible gaming practices, and align the country’s gambling industry with international standards while enhancing its appeal as a tourism hub.

Addressing the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa asserted the Government’s intent to regulate the gaming and betting sector more effectively.

He noted that while the Government currently collects taxes from gambling establishments, a regulatory authority would provide a structured framework to oversee operations and introduce standardisation of the casino industry.

The proposal submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as the Finance, Planning and Economic Development Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
