Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary and MP Sagara Kariyawasam, yesterday outlined the qualities necessary for the party’s candidate in the upcoming Presidential Election.
Speaking to journalists, Kariyawasam stressed the importance of a leader committed to protecting the country’s resources and maintaining national unity.
“The ideal candidate should not engage in selling the country’s assets but rather focus on safeguarding local resources,” he said.
Kariyawasam also highlighted the necessity for a leader who can uphold and implement the proposals outlined in the Mahinda Chinthana policy statement, which prioritises economic development, social welfare and national unity.
He underscored the need for a leader who can preserve the unity of the country, suggesting that the chosen candidate must be capable of steering the country towards prosperity, while ensuring inclusivity and harmony among all communities.
The SLPP’s focus on specific candidate requirements for the upcoming Presidential election comes amid their decision not to reveal their nominee, while other key parties such as the SJB and NPP have already announced their candidates.
The candidate selection process will likely reflect these priorities, aiming to present a leader who embodies the country’s largest party’s vision for Sri Lanka’s future.
