The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved leasing of a historic official residence designed by renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa and a portion of land with the extent of five acres to the Geoffrey Bawa Foundation.

The residence, located at the Polonthalawa farm under the National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) will be leased to the Geoffrey Bawa Foundation along with an adjoining extent of five acre land. The decision follows a formal request from the Geoffrey Bawa Foundation to acquire the property and surrounding land on a lease basis.

The foundation aims to preserve and maintain the architectural integrity of the residence, which stands as a testament to Bawa’s influential design style, known for blending modernist principles with traditional Sri Lankan elements.

The proposal to this effect submitted by Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
