The Government yesterday assured that a lockdown will not be enforced during the festive season, but called on the general public to strictly adhere to health guidelines and act responsibly.
“The successful vaccination drive does not interpret that the virus has been fully controlled in country. The future depends on the behaviour of each and every individual. However, the Cabinet of Ministers this week didn’t discuss on a possible lockdown over the festive season,” the Cabinet Co-Spokesman Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said in response to a question posed at the post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday.
He pointed out that the entire responsibility of how the country would move forward will depend on individual health practices, adding that the emergence of the new COVID variant, Omicron is of concern.
“We reopened the country after much consideration into all sectors. Failing to act responsibly will put us to an unimaginable economic jeopardy,” Dr. Pathirana cautioned.
He also said the public must ensure they wear face masks and maintain social distancing at all times.
Dr. Pathirana said the Government has taken measures to fast track the administration of the booster shots too.
