The Government yesterday dismissed speculation that Senior Economic and Financial Adviser to the President Duminda Hulangamuwa has been selected as the next Treasury Secretary.

His remarks came following rumours gaining traction after Hulangamuwa’s appearance on a talk show on Monday (24), where he acknowledged discussions about the possibility of taking up the role.

When asked about the appointment, Hulangamuwa responded: “There is a discussion, let’s see what will happen.”

However, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa clarified that no such decision has been made so far.

When journalists posed questions during the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, he distanced himself from Hulangamuwa’s remarks, stating: “I don’t know what exactly was said by him at the talk show and under what circumstances he said it. It is not even my concern.”

During the talk show televised, Hulangamuwa was asked if he would accept the position if President Anura Kumara Disanayake invited him to take up the role by stepping down from Ernst & Young (EY).

Hulangamuwa cautiously responded saying: “That is something I will have to think about. There are some expectations there. There is a global change at EY within this year. So I have some obligations there. I will have to make a decision after considering all that.”

Addressing further questions regarding engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dr. Jayatissa reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the program.

“We have not deviated from our original policy in working with the IMF. I can assure you that the Government is implementing what we pledged before the election,” he asserted.
