Despite the escalating electricity tariffs amid the ongoing economic crisis, reports indicate that Government institutions have been mandated to illuminate their premises ‘appropriately’ for the current circumstances in observance of Sri Lanka’s 76th Independence Day on 4 February following a circular issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The circular has provided guidelines for illuminating all Government institutions, designating the country’s Independence Day as a special occasion.

Consequently, the heads of Government institutions and agencies have been instructed to illuminate their buildings appropriately considering the current situation and communicate this directive to all the institutions under their purview.

The instructions, while encouraging appropriate light decorations for the current circumstances, align with a week during which the supplementary budget estimates presented to Parliament by the Government faced substantial criticism, revealing a lack of fiscal discipline.

The circular also directs the hoisting of the national flag at all Government institution buildings for a week, spanning from 1 to 7 February as part of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day celebrations.
