Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Vijitha Herath
The Government has approved expanded use of Galle Face Green in Colombo, allowing the iconic site to host a variety of events beyond religious gatherings, under a new ‘Clean and Green Galle Face Ground’ initiative.
The move was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday.
Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that this decision reverses a 2023 policy that limited activities at the Galle Face Green to religious events only.
The previous restriction was introduced by the former Government in April 2023, with the aim of preserving the site under the management of Sri Lanka Ports Management and Consultation Services Ltd., a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
“Recognising Galle Face Green’s role as a key cultural and tourist hub, we have opted to make it accessible for a broader range of activities, including tourism-related events and commemorations like May Day,” he added.
Herath however noted that the events will be allowed on a conditional basis, with strict guidelines to ensure that the site remains an attractive, clean and secure venue for both locals and tourists.
The maintenance of Galle Face Green incurs monthly costs of Rs. 2.5–3 million, underscoring the need for well-regulated management.
He said this change in policy aims to uphold Galle Face Green’s role as a national landmark, while enhancing its appeal as a secure, vibrant space for public gatherings, festivals and celebrations.
