Govt. loses $ 30 m monthly due to gold smugglers: State Minister

State Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya yesterday claimed that the Government loses about $ 30 million in revenue monthly, as people smuggle gold into the country. 

“Immediate legal action will be taken against people who arrive in the country wearing gold articles exceeding the specified limit,” he said yesterday.

Noting that those involved in such illegal activities have been identified, the State Minister Siyambalapitiya said officials have been informed to take immediate legal action against passengers wearing oversized gold articles at the airport. 

However, he assured that those measures will be carried out without causing any inconvenience to the regular passengers at the airports.
