The Government has decided to withdraw the Gazette notification issued earlier this year stipulating a Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for eggs from last night.
The move came into effect after Trade, Commerce, and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando announced that eggs imported from India will be sold at Rs. 35 per egg at all Lanka Sathosa outlets from yesterday.
The move is expected to ease the burden on consumers and make eggs more accessible to the general public.
As per the 19 April Extraordinary Gazette No: 2328/05, it stipulated an MRP for eggs by weight. A kilogram of white eggs was priced at Rs. 880, while a kilogram of brown eggs was priced at Rs. 920.
