In a move to revitalise and expand the ancillary services linked to the country’s transport industry, the Parliamentary Sub-Committee led by Industries and Entrepreneurship Development Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe has called for public views and suggestions to help shape new business models.

The Government initiative invites citizens, businesses, and institutions to contribute their ideas on a wide range of areas crucial to modernising the sector.

Among the focus points are the optimal use of existing resources, identification of new business opportunities, enhancement of current services, and revitalisation of non-operational projects.

The Committee is also keen to receive proposals from various organisations and to better understand the latest global trends influencing the transport industry.

By opening the consultation to the public, the Committee intends to create a more inclusive development framework that not only addresses inefficiencies but also encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

“Over the past 40 years, Sri Lanka’s public transportation system has steadily declined due to a lack of clear purpose, corruption, and inefficiencies. The new Government, however, sees public transportation as a cornerstone of our strategy for economic growth. Enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of both passenger and goods transportation will be a key priority over the next decade,” Abeysinghe noted via a post on LinkedIn.

At the same time, he said public transport offers immense economic potential through complementary services. “We invite your innovative ideas to help transform Sri Lanka’s public transportation system—especially through dynamic public-private partnerships,” he added.

The authorities believe that fresh insights from the public and industry stakeholders will be vital in crafting sustainable, future-ready solutions for a sector that plays a critical role in the country’s economy.

Participants are encouraged to propose ideas that could transform the landscape of ancillary transport services, including logistics, vehicle maintenance, support infrastructure, and passenger amenities. The initiative also seeks to ensure that non-operational assets in the sector are revitalised or repurposed to unlock new value and economic activity.

Suggestions and business model proposals can be submitted directly via email to [email protected].
