In a bid to safeguard consumers ahead of the festive season, the Government has decided to set a Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for broiler chicken, effective from Wednesday night.
According to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), the price of chicken with skin on has been reduced from Rs. 475 to Rs. 430 per kilogram, while the price for a kilogram of skinless chicken has been reduced from Rs. 600 to Rs. 530.
“The authority took this decision to safeguard consumers from errant traders who might increase the price of chicken unnecessarily during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season,” a top official of the CAA told the Daily FT.
It was pointed out that consumers are being severely inconvenienced due to the exorbitant prices of the food items ahead of the festive season and the move taken by the CAA to control this situation will also help to supply adequate essential food items to the market.
