The Government on Saturday addressed growing criticism over a viral video in which a tourist condemned the intervention of Police to stop a DJ even at a hotel in Matara at 10 p.m.
Addressing the media, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa clarified that the restriction on sound events after 10 p.m. from Monday to Thursday is not a new policy introduced by the incumbent Government, explaining that it is in fact a long-standing directive issued by the Supreme Court in 2005.
He said the Court ruling allows sound events to extend till 1 a.m. on. Friday and Saturday and till 12.30 am on Sunday.
Dr. Jayatissa said that the viral video circulating online incorrectly claims the sound restriction is a recent measure implemented by the administration.
Acknowledging the concerns raised by the tourism sector, the Cabinet Spokesman assured that the Government is aware of the potential negative impact on tourism and is currently discussing possible amendments to the regulations.
He said such misunderstandings and misinformation crates a negative impact on the tourism industry, when the incumbent Government has identified the sector as a key contributor to the economic recovery and development.
