The Government has decided to conduct comprehensive audits of all State institutions to investigate suspected fraud and corruption, particularly during the previous administration.

Sources revealed that the audits will also focus on allegations surrounding several high-profile incidents, including the 2020 MV X-Press Pearl disaster, the purchase of new aircrafts for SriLankan Airlines, and the construction of expressways. In a statement made during the Government’s policy address to Parliament last week President Anura Kumara Dissanayake affirmed that the rule of law must be re-established, with a strong emphasis on holding those responsible for corruption accountable. He said if any State institution is found guilty of fraud or corruption, the law would be strictly enforced. One of the key areas under investigation will be the MV X-Press Pearl fire, which devastated Sri Lanka’s western coastline and marine environment three years ago.

The Government has committed to reopening investigations into this incident, which has long been a source of controversy.

Minister Vijitha Herath, the out-going Cabinet spokesperson recently confirmed the Government’s intention to review these matters thoroughly. He had reiterated that the re-opening of investigations would contribute to restoring public trust in the rule of law and the country’s legal framework.
