The Government has decided on a major reform initiative targeting over 100 non-commercial State institutions, following a comprehensive review conducted by a Cabinet-appointed officers’ committee.
Announcing the decision at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa stated that the committee chaired by the Secretary to the Prime Minister has reviewed 160 institutions.
The review process will extend to 36 higher education centres, including universities with the assistance of a specialised subcommittee comprising experts in the field.
“The committee has already submitted recommendations for 124 institutions, categorising them under nine groups while the remaining institutions will undergo further scrutiny. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the implementation of these recommendations,” he said.
The proposal to this effect was submitted by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
Dr. Jayatissa also noted that some institutions will remain unchanged, while others will be integrated due to overlapping operations.
“Some of the institutions can remain unchanged, but others will be integrated due to overlapping operations. Certain organisations exist only on paper—merely with a name board that no longer serve functional purpose,” he said.
