Minister Vijitha Herath yesterday revealed that the 130-year old iconic Nuwara Eliya Post Office building, along with its premises, will be used exclusively for Postal Department operations.

Explaining the new Government’s stance on the matter during the World Post Day celebrations yesterday, he said all previous decisions regarding the property will be suspended.

The former Government proposed to convert the colonial era-built Nuwara Eliya Post Office into a hotel. The move drew a string of protests from people, trade unions, and other organisations.

The Post Office in Nuwara Eliya, the Tudor-style two-storey red-brick building with a clock spire, was constructed in 1894 by the British. Sri Lanka Post has been in existence for more than 209 years, with a proud history and heritage. This post office is considered a landmark tourist point in the country.
