Govt. to provide discounted food packs for 800,000 families on ‘Aswesuma’ waiting list

The Government will offer heavily discounted food packs to over 800,000 families on the Aswesuma welfare benefit scheme waiting list, aiming to ease the cost of living and ensure food security ahead of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Under this initiative, Lanka Sathosa will provide essential food item packs worth Rs. 5,000 at a 50% discount, allowing eligible households to purchase them for just Rs. 2,500. For families in areas where Lanka Sathosa outlets are unavailable, the packs will be distributed through selected Sri Lanka Consumer Cooperative Societies Federation Ltd., (COOPFED) to ensure widespread access.

The relief program, which runs from 1 to 13 April—targets 812,753 families currently registered on the Aswesuma waiting list. A strict monitoring mechanism will be in place to ensure the assistance reaches those who need it most.

Launched under the theme “Sathutin Sathosin”, the initiative is a joint effort by the Ministry of Finance, the Food Policy and Security Committee, and the Cooperative Retail Network. As the first Sinhala and Tamil New Year under the current Government, the program underscores its commitment to ensuring affordable access to essential goods and preventing shortages during the festive season.
