The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has filed a case before the Supreme Court against the Power and Energy Ministry and Ceylon Electricity Board citing failure to enforce the pledge reached by all parties.
Power and Energy Ministry Secretary, CEB Chairman and the Attorney General have been cited as respondents.
“During a discussion held on 25 January, an agreement was reached by the Ministry, the CEB, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation to refrain from imposing power cuts till 17 February considering the 2022 Advanced Level Examination that is currently underway,” issuing a statement, the HRCSL noted on Saturday.
It added that a directive was issued in this regard subsequently from 26 January under provisions of the Human Rights Commission Act No. 21 of 1996.
The HRCSL accordingly filed the case over the failure to respond to the directive and the failure to enforce the undertaking and the charge of acting against the HRCSL and disrespecting the Commission.
