Hotels are fuming over the move by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to slap “super high tariff” on them as against lower rates to others.

Small, medium and large hotels are being threatened with a hike ranging between Rs. 38 per kWh and Rs. 56 per kWh. This is in comparison to Rs. 14 and Rs. 34.50 per kWh at present.  Prior to the last upward revision, hotels were charged Rs. 8.80 and Rs. 23.50 per kWh.

“When hotels are struggling to survive we are placed on a higher tariff scale than any other industry,” The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka President M. Shanthikumar lamented. “Placing us on a higher tariff is highly demoralising and will jeopardise the continuity of the tourism industry,” he warned.
