The Special Commodity Levy on imported potatoes was reduced from Rs. 50 per kilogram to Rs. 25 per kilogram with effect from midnight on Wednesday.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Finance S.R. Attygalle said the import tax on potatoes had been reduced as an alternative to the rising prices of vegetables.
He said the revision of import levies now would not be a problem for local potato farmers since the local potato harvest would be available in the market in February.
