Inland Revenue gets new Commissioner General

W.A. Sepalika Chandrasekara has been appointed as the Commissioner General at the Inland Revenue Department, succeeding the interim leadership of Upul Jayawardene. 

She has previously served as the Deputy Commissioner General - Tax Administration (Medium Corporate, Corporate Small Entities and Non-Corporate Sector, Regional Offices and Risk Management).

Having served in various capacities within the Department, Chandrasekara has a wealth of experience to this key position.

The appointment comes as the Government seeks to bolster its revenue streams, setting an ambitious target of Rs. 4 trillion, a substantial increase from the previous year’s Rs. 3 trillion. With an emphasis on tax revenue, the Government aims to generate Rs. 3.8 trillion, while income and profit taxes are anticipated to contribute over Rs. 1 trillion to the overall fiscal goal.

The new leadership is essential for the Government to navigate the complexities of tax collection, contributing to the financial sustainability and ensuring the seamless functioning of the Inland Revenue Department.

The Acting Commissioner General Jayawardene concluded his six-month tenure on 31 December 2023. His appointment on an interim basis took place pending Cabinet approval after the position became vacant in July 2023.
