Kandy SC clinches league for 24th occasion

Kandy Sports Club has once again asserted its dominance in Sri Lankan rugby, reclaiming the league title after beating CR & FC in their last encounter at Nittawela Rugby Stadium last weekend in front of a packed house.

The club, a powerhouse in domestic rugby, remains a force to be reckoned with, displaying an unbeaten run this season with just one game remaining. Their triumphant return to the top highlights their resilience, depth, and unwavering commitment to excellence by the players, coaching staff and their Rugby Committee.

This latest victory adds to Kandy SC’s illustrious legacy, which began in earnest in 1994 under the leadership of Indrajith Bandaranayake. Despite existing for over a century, the club had never won a league title until Bandaranayake led them to their first historic championship. What a moment he came all the way from Australia to be with the boys and handing over their new set of jerseys before the commencement of the CR encounter. Kandy SC has been synonymous with success, setting the benchmark for rugby in Sri Lanka. They have won the league no less than 24 times in the past three decades.

The 2024/2025 campaign was spearheaded by skipper Soori, who led from the front with composure and tactical acumen. He was ably supported by key players such as Tari, Nigel, Ranjan, Kavindu, Dinal and Jensen, forming the core of a formidable squad. Their cohesion and experience played a crucial role in maintaining an unbeaten record, proving that Kandy SC remains a class apart in the domestic circuit. Players such as Sanushka and Dange too chipped in when they were needed for the game playing a very good supporting role.

This season also unearthed a new generation of rugby talent, with the likes of Thilina Bandara, Dahan Wickramarachchi, and Shaahid Zumri emerging as standout performers. These young guns brought energy and flair to the team, reinforcing Kandy SC’s ability to blend experience with youth. Their rapid rise is a testament to the club’s emphasis on player development and succession planning and their future looks very bright with the positive thinking towards the younger generation by Fazil Marija and his troops.

Backing their on-field excellence, Kandy SC received significant corporate support, with Cargills serving as the principal sponsor. Their investment, along with additional backing from Crysbro, has been instrumental in maintaining the club’s professional standards. Financial stability and structured management have allowed the team to focus solely on their performance, a crucial element in their continued dominance. The guidance given by former Royal scrum-half Malik Samarawickrema is very valuable though he is not full time involved lately.

Much of Kandy SC’s success can be attributed to the coaching expertise of Fazil Marija, a former club great who has seamlessly transitioned into a leadership role. Supported by Terence Henry, Marija’s strategic approach has ensured that Kandy SC remains at the cutting edge of Sri Lankan rugby. His ability to inspire and refine talent has been a major driving force behind their flawless campaign. Former Isipathana player, Kapila Silva managed the team with top level of respect and supported the boys on and off the field with Administrative Manager, Asela Wickremasinghe too chipping in.

The backroom staff also played an integral role in maintaining the squad’s physical and mental readiness. Trainer Tharaka Algama ensured peak fitness levels, while physiotherapist Laksitha played a key role in injury management. Masseur Mobby’s support towards the team further reinforced the professional standards that have become synonymous with Kandy SC.

This season’s title triumph is not just about statistics; it is a statement of intent. The club’s ability to bounce back after last season’s setback is a testament to their championship mindset. Their unbeaten run, with one game still to be played, underlines their superiority and determination to remain at the top.

They want to end unbeaten when they play their last encounter against Havies on 16 March at home while awaiting another three more games in the Clifford Cup Knock-out rugby which will be worked off soon after the league. Kandy SC matches will be played at Nittawela Rugby Stadium.
