The grand opening of the Amari Hotel in Colombo brought together key political leaders and industry stakeholders highlighting tourism’s vital role in economic recovery.

Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath speaking at the inauguration expressed optimism about the sector’s growth trajectory.

“Tourism is not just an industry; it is a reflection of our country’s culture, people, history and heritage,” the Minister remarked, adding that the uptick in arrivals since September is a promising sign for the industry.

He underscored tourism’s importance in enhancing Sri Lanka’s global image and its role as a key economic driver.

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe commended the new Government’s adherence to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, crediting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

“We cannot afford to derail the IMF program and tourism is one alternative that offers a path to accelerate growth,” he added.

Wickremesinghe stressed the need to raise the average daily spending of tourists from $ 169 to $ 300 to boost foreign exchange revenue.

He noted that the economy appears to be progressing at a 5% growth rate, exceeding the earlier projection of 3% growth.

Noting that Sri Lanka’s loan repayments will resume in 2028, he said it is therefore imperative to maximise income from tourism and other key sectors before then.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa emphasised the need to boost the country’s tourism infrastructure, proposing the establishment of nine hotel schools one in each province to address the growing demand for skilled hospitality professionals.

“Tourism is a key industry and we must build the capacity necessary to meet rising expectations,” he added.
