Labour Department Commissioner General Prabath Chandrakeerthi has made a written request to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct an urgent investigation of those responsible for propagating false information on social media associated with the ongoing labour law reforms.

The Commissioner General stated that a process of gathering public opinion has begun to bring about much-needed revisions to the statute, whilst insisting that the drafting of a new piece of legislation has not yet started.

It was also emphasised that speculations are spreading on social media that the new labour law has been finalised and will negatively impact labour rights.

The letter noted that those social media posts have the potential to spark labour unrest by inciting mistrust and hostility among workers and trade unions towards the Department of Labour.

Against this backdrop, the Commissioner General requested an immediate investigation into those responsible for disseminating this erroneous information over social media.
