A leading legal body for the Asia-Pacific, Law Asia unanimously passed a resolution yesterday to dispatch an urgent fact-finding mission to Sri Lanka in the wake of the island’s gripping constitutional deadlock.
The decision was made at a council meeting held in Siem Reap, following a meeting with Presidents of all Bar Associations in the region and their representatives from 40 countries, including China, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, England and the US.
Noting with “shock and dismay” the situation in Sri Lanka, Law Asia resolved the following:
“This matter was taken up when the Bar Association of Sri Lanka tabled before the council by the Alternate Country Councillor Sunil Abeyratne the press release of the BASL where in it has expressed grave concern over the turn of events in Sri Lanka with the swearing in of a new Prime Minister recently.”
It has also urged the Parliament be convened immediately.
