Law reforms for economic stabilisation before Parliament next month: Patali

The National Council Sub-Committee for Identifying short and medium term programs related to Economic Stabilisation chaired by MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said the proposals to ensure law reforms related to economic stabilisation in the country will be presented at the end of December.

The Sub-Committee convened recently to discuss the new laws related to economic stabilisation.

MP Ranawaka said it is important to discuss whether there are shortcomings in the law among the reasons that led to the country’s economic bankruptcy, and to discuss the next steps to be taken.

Experts who participated in the meeting stated that reforms must be made in the legal system in order to obtain local and international support to create economic stability.

The role and accountability of the Central Bank, the Treasury, the Government, State officials, politicians and the business community in dealing with them were also discussed.

Proposals were presented on the need for a large-scale anti-corruption process and the importance of implementing the law on assets and liabilities.

Justice Ministry officials informed that 55 new laws and amendments to existing laws are currently being made.

Senior Attorney’s stated that due to COVID-pandemic, the number of cases pending in Court is significant, and called for trials to be managed efficiently.
