The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) yesterday announced a daily power cut of an hour and forty-five minutes during the day time, and one hour at night.
The latest measure was after the CEB enforced a power cut of one hour last night.
The disruption follows a major eight-hour nationwide blackout on Monday, due to a breakdown in the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant (NCPP), which engineers said will take several days to fully resolve and restore normal power supply.
The Power Ministry on Monday appointed a seven-member committee to investigate the countrywide blackout that left millions of Sri Lankans inconvenienced, with businesses, water supply, and even traffic coming to a standstill in the power outage.
In a statement the CEB said it is currently experiencing a severe energy/capacity deficit due to unavailability of Lakvijaya Power Plant subsequent to the total power failure occurred on 17th August 2020.
CEB said it is reluctantly compelled to manage the system in such a way that the demand is always controllable to maximum generation so that a stable power system is maintained throughout the country until situation is normalized.
“At this critical stage, CEB kindly requests all the customers to switch off non-essential electrical appliances between 0800h to 2200h so that CEB could minimize the demand curtailment,” the statement added.
