Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) leader Mahinda Rajapaksa has criticised the Government, which is led by his own party, for imposing numerous new taxes on the public.

Speaking to the media at an event in Gampola on Monday, Rajapaksa criticised the Government for continuing to burden the people with taxes.

Rajapaksa confirmed his intention to form a Government. “Yes, we will definitely form a Government,” he declared confidently in response to a question posed.

When asked about the possibility of cooperating with President Ranil Wickremesinghe, he said that the decision would be made by the party in due time. “That is something we will have to decide later. The party will take that decision,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the SLPP All-Island Working Committee has decided that any candidate appointed or supported by the party must align with Mahinda Chinthana principles and policies.

Sources within the party indicated that the committee also reached a unanimous agreement that the SLPP candidate should not support the division of the country.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said that the prevailing consensus among those present was that the party’s Presidential candidate should be someone willing to adhere to the Mahinda Chintana vision and policies.
