Former President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday expressed his readiness to disclose the true masterminds behind the Easter Sunday terror attack of 2019 if directed by the Court. He made this assertion during a media interaction in Kandy.
“We are aware of the origins of the Easter Sunday terror attack. All the apprehended terrorists, currently facing prosecution, were captured during my tenure,” he stated.
Sirisena emphasised that while the true orchestrators of the attack remain undisclosed, he personally possesses this information. He expressed willingness to divulge it if the Court so mandates.
“If requested or ordered by the Court, I am prepared to reveal the information,” he affirmed.
Moreover, Sirisena underscored that upon disclosure, it becomes the responsibility of the judges to maintain confidentiality regarding the provided information.
In January, Sirisena was instructed by the Courts to compensate the victims of the 2019 Easter bombings after the Supreme Court held top Government, police, and intelligence officials, including the former President, responsible for the failure to prevent the bombings. The attacks resulted in the tragic loss of 269 lives and left over 500 civilians injured.
