Major road renovation project gets Cabinet approval

  • Optional Road Network to cover 100,000 km of road to highways and main roads
  • Overtaking lanes, surface renewal of whole road network part of project

Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of priority projects for the construction of overtaking lanes, surface renewal of the whole road network to meet international standards and to develop an ‘Optional Road Network’ of 100,000 km to reach highways and main roads without difficulty.

Cabinet also approved the proposal which also seeks to improve the rural road network to enter this Optional Road Network.

This project will be part of the National Policy Framework of the Government, ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour,’ in which renovation of road network has been identified as a key factor.

The proposal to Cabinet was presented by Minister of Roads and Highways Johnston Fernando.
