The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) has praised the positive political culture demonstrated in the recently concluded 2024 Presidential Election and called for further strengthening of these values as the country prepares for the upcoming Parliamentary Election.

In a statement, NMSJ Chairman and former Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya commended the peaceful conduct of the Presidential Election, noting that no incidents of violence were reported. Both the winner and the losing candidate handled the results with grace and respect, setting a commendable precedent for the nation’s political landscape.

“The peaceful nature of the election and the way both sides accepted the public’s decision over a single weekend is something that the country can be proud of,” Jayasuriya said.

Looking ahead to the Parliamentary Election, the NMSJ emphasised the need for political parties to continue fostering this positive political culture by ensuring the election of honourable representatives to Parliament.

Jayasuriya pointed out that while not all Members of Parliament (MPs) are to blame, past Parliaments have been marred by the misconduct of certain MPs, which has drawn public criticism.

The NMSJ proposed that all political parties commit to several key reforms in the candidate selection process for the next Parliamentary Election. These reforms include ensuring that no candidates facing serious criminal charges—such as murder, drug abuse, or rape—are nominated. Additionally, candidates should disclose whether they have paid income taxes and, if not, provide a valid explanation. Jayasuriya also suggested that MPs should submit a health assessment report if required, a practice already in place for high-ranking officials such as ministry secretaries and foreign diplomats.

Political parties, the NMSJ stated, must clarify whether they will adhere to these recommendations and explain to the public if they do not. The movement stressed the importance of transparency, allowing the electorate to make informed choices during the election.

“This proposal is made with the best intentions, without any hidden agendas, solely for the betterment of the country,” Jayasuriya added.
