After the National People’s Power (NPP) securing a super majority in Parliament, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva yesterday assured that the power granted by the people will be used responsibly, focusing on rebuilding a nation plagued by economic collapse, poverty, corruption, and crime.
The victory, which saw the NPP dominate every district except Batticaloa, was described by Silva as a clear mandate to end an era of divisive governance and begin a new chapter in the nation’s political history.
Speaking at a press conference following the election results at the JVP head office, Silva highlighted the unprecedented nature of the victory. The NPP secured wins in the Jaffna and Vanni districts, historically considered strongholds of northern politics, as well as in Ampara and Trincomalee in the Eastern Province. The party also swept through districts with significant populations of hill-country communities, including Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Kandy, and Ratnapura.
“For the first time in history, the people of the North have placed their trust in a leader from the South. The people of the North, East, and the hill country have set aside divisions, rejecting the lies and misconceptions spread by racist leaders. They joined hands with the South, uniting as one nation. This is a profound victory of trust, understanding, and unity, thank you, North, for believing in us.” he said, adding that the victory in Jaffna is far greater than securing 159 seats in Parliament.
“This is not just a victory; it is a unification of all Sri Lankan people,” Silva said. “For the first time, the people of the north, east, and south have come together, setting aside racial and religious divisions. This is a rejection of old politics based on racism” he noted.
The NPP’s success, which included an 80% turnout among public sector voters, has given the party a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Silva assured that this power would be wielded responsibly, focusing on rebuilding a nation plagued by economic collapse, poverty, corruption, and crime.
“We understand the depth and weight of this mandate,” Silva said. “We are inheriting a country burdened by debt, economic ruin, and a tarnished international reputation. This is a mandate for hope, for rebuilding, and for change.”
“This victory carries a profound political depth and substance, surpassing the achievements of past alliances cobbled together by multiple Government parties,” he noted.
Silva also took the opportunity to thank those who supported the NPP’s journey, acknowledging the sacrifices made by countless individuals over the years. “To everyone who endured hardships, worked tirelessly, and placed their trust in us, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your courage has paved the way for a new Sri Lanka.”
In his address, Silva called attention to the rejection of divisive tactics by the Tamil and Muslim communities, despite attempts by some leaders to incite racial and religious tensions. “This result has shown that the people have moved beyond the politics of hate and division. They have embraced unity and progress,” he said.
The NPP’s victory, Silva noted, was bolstered by its transparent and frugal governance during the campaign, contrasting sharply with the excesses of past administrations. “We have demonstrated how to govern simply, without wasting public money, and by working alongside the people,” he said.
Silva emphasised that the NPP’s mission is to create a disciplined, corruption-free Sri Lanka where democracy and economic fairness prevail. Among their immediate priorities are alleviating rural poverty, reducing debt, rebuilding the economy, and fostering a political culture focused on the well-being of the people.
“This power will not be used to oppress or exploit. It will be used to establish democracy, ensure good governance, and rebuild our nation. Together, we will create a country where every Sri Lankan can live with dignity,” Silva concluded.
