  • Summons all parties involved to revise tariffs at next meeting on Tuesday

The National Council yesterday decided to summon all parties involved in the process to revise the electricity tariff on Tuesday.

The decision was made when the Board of Directors and officers representing several institutions including the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) were summoned by the National Council to discuss the proposed electricity tariff.

The National Council convened in Parliament yesterday under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

Officials representing the CEB said the electricity regulator PUCSL must promptly provide a decision on the proposal to increase electricity tariffs proposed by the CEB along with the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers.

In response, PUCSL Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said essential calculations will be completed first.

Accordingly, Speaker Abeywardana suggested the CEB and the PUCSL discuss the matter and reach a final decision.

Thus, it was decided to summon all relevant parties before the National Council again on 24 January.

In addition, the draft of the final report of the National Council sub-committee on identifying programs related to economic stabilisation was also presented to the National Council by committee Chairman MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.
