New Committee to evaluate development projects

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the appointment of a committee to provide recommendations to the Government on development projects to ensure that those accomplish desired objectives.

The committee will be chaired by former Deputy Treasury Secretary Daya Liyanage.

The committee is tasked to provide recommendations to the Cabinet regarding the Projects with an estimated cost or more than the estimated cost submitted to the recommendation of the Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committees. 

 “It has been found that some of the development projects or programs implemented in the past have not been able to achieve the desired results due to the initiation of such projects without proper identification and formal evaluation,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday. 

The move was announced in the 2023 Budget proposal. 

The proposal to this effect was submitted by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Finance Minister was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
