The Government is set to establish a new body aimed at supervising and advising ministries on the implementation of policies, marking a first for the country.
Official sources said this new body will consist of MPs and experts who were involved in the drafting and implementation of policies for the National People’s Power (NPP) prior to the Presidential Election. The initiative was outlined in the NPP’s policy manifesto ahead of the election as well.
The mechanism will be responsible for overseeing each ministry, providing guidance, and advising Cabinet Ministers in the execution of their duties. This move aims to ensure more effective policy implementation across the Government.
The new Cabinet, consisting of 22 Ministers and 29 Deputy Ministers, has already been appointed, and the first Cabinet meeting has been successfully convened.
While a similar oversight initiative was introduced during the tenure of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa with the appointment of oversight councillors, it was not a formal mechanism.
