New mechanism soon to refund WHT to pensioners

A new mechanism will be implemented following instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to refund Withholding Tax (WHT) for pensioners, who do not fall within the income tax range.

At a discussion held recently with Finance Ministry officials, President Dissanayake directed the officials to come up with an efficient mechanism to refund WHT, soon.

The President was of the view that the pensioners were facing several difficulties and the Government should introduce this mechanism to give them relief.

Under this mechanism, the pensioners, whose WHT have already been deducted from bank deposit interests, can get the deducted amount back.

According to Ministry officials, the pensioners have to collect their bank statements and other relevant documents to show as evidence of WHT deduction on bank deposit interest.
