Norochcholai Power Plant unit-3 to shut down for 100-day maintenance from 13 June: Minister

• Assures no power cuts as generation will be managed with other thermal power plants
• Dismisses speculations by CEB unions of blackouts and coal shortages
• Asserts coal requirement for this season has been fulfilled

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said yesterday the third generator of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant will be shut down for 100 days from 13 June for a scheduled major overhaul maintenance work.

The Minister however assured power cuts will not be imposed, adding that power generation will be managed with other thermal power plants.

He also confirmed that the 30th cargo of coal for the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant is being unloaded at present.

“There will be no blackouts or power cuts as speculated earlier by Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) unions and media reports due to coal shortages,” Wijesekera asserted.

Accordingly, he said the full coal requirement of the CEB for this season has been fulfilled.
