In a bid to enhance convenience for tourists visiting Sri Lanka, the country is set to introduce on-arrival driving licenses at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) from 15 April.
State Minister of Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna said the move will help to position the country as a tourist-friendly destination, offering convenience and ease of access to visitors from around the globe. Addressing journalists at the Presidential Media Centre yesterday, he said tourists keen on obtaining a driving license in Sri Lanka can now apply for it directly at the airport upon their arrival.
“All necessary arrangements have been made to facilitate the issuance of the driving license upon their departure from the airport,” he added.
Under the new system, tourists exiting the airport will have the opportunity to swiftly and efficiently acquire their driver’s license, enabling them to explore the country at their own pace and convenience.
The fees for obtaining a driving license are structured as, $ 25 for one month, $ 50 for three months, $ 75 for six months and $ 200 for a year or longer, providing tourists with flexible options based on the duration of their stay.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with key Government entities including the Department of Immigration and Emigration, Civil Aviation Authority and the Tourism Ministry.
