Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) Director General Sarath Jayamanne, PC, said that the last 23 years had seen only four persons being found guilty of corruption through the Magistrate Courts.
The Director General attributed this meagre statistic to the complex legal process in the country’s judicial system as well as the difficulties in providing charges.
He noted that corruption had been included as an offence in the Bribery and Corruption Act in 1994 and that although 75 such cases had been heard in the past 23 years, only four people had been successfully prosecuted.
