The apparel industry refuted the statement by the Ceylon Freight and Logistics Association welcoming the Government’s move.  JAAF alleged that there are attempts to mislead Government, public officials, and the public at large to earn extra profits through anti-competitive practices.

“Already cost increases have been announced as freight is being dismantled and charges are being rolled out to avoid market forces,” JAAF warned but expressed confidence that President Ranil Wickremesinghe will resolve matters to help exporters and importers against anti-competitive behaviour.

Shippers Council which consists of 17 associations representing exporters and importers said the introduction of gazette leads to unethical profiteering by local agents/representatives to transfer out of the country, illegal profits to principals overseas.

Sugar Importers Association President and Essential Food Commodities Importers and Traders Association Consultant Parakum M. Abeysekara charged that following the Government’s move essential food commodities and all imported products to go up in prices.
