  • Seeks stakeholder inputs for electricity tariff revision from 17 December

Electricity regulator, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), yesterday informed that its final decision on the proposed electricity tariff revisions will be announced on 17 January 2025.

In preparation, it noted that a public consultation process will commence on 17 December, allowing citizens to voice their opinion on the matter.

The PUCSL has invited the general public to submit their feedback either virtually or in writing. Submissions will be accepted till 8 January 2025. Submissions can be made via email, WhatsApp, Facebook or post to the PUCSL offices.

In addition, the public has been given the opportunity to submit their comments and suggestions orally covering all nine provinces. The citizens can reach out to voice their opinion through the oral consultations at the District Secretariat offices from 24 December 2024 to 10 January 2025.

The Commission’s stakeholder consultation is as per Section 17 of the PUCSL Act No. 35 of 2002, on the proposed electricity tariff.

On 6 December, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) submitted its latest tariff revision proposal to the PUCSL, noting that existing tariffs would remain in effect for the next six months. Thus submission is part of the Government’s new policy of limiting tariff adjustments to twice a year.

Previously, under the former administration, electricity tariffs were subject to quarterly revisions. In 2023, the tariff structure was revised three times, while two revisions were implemented this year. The latest proposal is expected to set electricity tariffs for the first half of 2025, with changes likely to take effect in the third week on January.
