Parliament agrees to set up Select Committee on electoral reforms

• SC to identify appropriate changes to election laws, electoral system and recommend necessary amendments
• 15-member SC to be named by Speaker 

Party leaders have agreed to set up a Select Committee of Parliament to identify appropriate changes in the election laws and the electoral system and recommend necessary amendments.

A motion for the setting up of the Select Committee has been included in the Addendum to the Order Book of Parliament.

The Chairman and members of the Committee will be named by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena once the motion is moved in Parliament.

The Committee will consist of 15 members and will have the power to summon any person to appear before it as well as call for documents or records, obtain written or oral evidence and obtain the services of specialists and experts in the relevant fields to assist the Committee.
