Parliament yesterday approved by a majority of 81 votes the proclamation made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa bringing into force emergency regulations for the supply of essential items of food and related services.

The regulations promulgated under the Public Security Ordinance was passed with 132 MPs voting for and 51 against.

Government MPs voted in favour of the emergency regulations, while Opposition parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, the JVP-led National People’s Party (NPP) and the Tamil National Alliance, voted against them.
